Local SEO for Contractors and Service Businesses: Where to Start

Roofing contractors installing tiles on a house, the kind of local business that benefits from local SEO

For contractors and local service businesses, most valuable searches have local intent: “roofer near me”, “HVAC repair in Dallas”, “commercial cleaning company Brooklyn”. Local SEO for contractors is how you show up for those searches, both in the map results and in the regular listings below them.

You don’t need to do everything at once. Here’s where to start, in the order we usually tackle it for clients.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the single biggest factor in whether you appear in the map pack. Make sure it’s verified, then fill in everything:

  • The right primary category, plus relevant secondary categories
  • Your service area, hours and phone number
  • A list of your services, with short descriptions
  • Real photos of your team, vehicles and finished work, added regularly
  • A short business description that says what you do and where

2. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent

Search engines cross-check your business details across the web. Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your website, your Google profile, and directories such as Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, the BBB and industry-specific listings. Fix old or duplicate listings when you find them.

3. Build a page for each service

One “Services” page that lists everything rarely ranks well. Give each main service its own page that explains what’s included, who it’s for, your process, pricing guidance if you can share it, and answers to common questions. This matches how people search and gives Google a clear page to show for each query.

4. Add location pages, carefully

If you serve several cities, a page for each main area can help, as long as each one is genuinely useful: projects you’ve done there, local details, and the services you offer in that area. Thin pages that only swap the city name tend to do more harm than good.

5. Get more reviews, consistently

The number, quality and recency of your Google reviews all matter. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review, including the negative ones. Automating review requests after each job, for example with GoHighLevel, makes this a habit rather than a chore.

6. Fix the technical basics

  • Speed: compress images and use caching so pages load quickly on phones.
  • Mobile: most local searches happen on phones, so your site must be easy to use on a small screen.
  • Titles and descriptions: give every page a unique title and meta description that includes the service and location.
  • Structured data: schema markup helps search engines understand your business, services and FAQs.
  • Indexing: submit your XML sitemap in Google Search Console and fix any pages it can’t index. Google’s SEO starter guide covers the basics well.

7. Earn local links and mentions

Links from local organisations carry weight: suppliers, trade associations, chambers of commerce, sponsorships and local news. One relevant local link is worth more than dozens of low-quality directory links.

8. Track what matters

Rankings are useful, but calls, form fills and booked jobs are what pay the bills. Track calls and form submissions from search in Google Analytics and your CRM so you know which pages and keywords actually bring in work.

How long does local SEO for contractors take?

Profile and technical fixes can help within weeks. Competitive rankings usually take three to six months of steady work. The businesses that win are the ones that keep at it, adding reviews, photos and helpful content every month.
